Absolutely, renting a car is a smart move for your Iceland elopement. It makes getting around much easier and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, especially if you’re eyeing those adventurous F-roads. Having your own wheels means you can stop for spontaneous photo ops, chase the Northern Lights, or just find a perfect spot for a picnic.
If you’re heading to Iceland during the winter, a 4x4 is your best bet. The snowy and icy conditions make a vehicle with all-wheel drive a necessity. In the summer, though, a regular car will do just fine for most routes.

Fall in Iceland—September through December—is my favorite time of year for elopements, even though it’s a bit short. Keep in mind that November and December are practically winter, so expect colder conditions. As a wedding photographer, having the opportunity to shoot during both sunrise and sunset is fantastic, especially with those early sunrises. The fall colors in Iceland are striking, with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows creating a stunning contrast against the country's mountains, glaciers, lava fields, and moss.
The weather can be quite variable, with temperatures ranging from 30°F (0°C) to 50°F (10°C). I recommend packing a good mix of clothes for all types of weather—sun, rain, snow, and wind—and being ready to adjust your plans as needed.
While there's no guarantee you'll see the Northern Lights on any given night, fall's longer nights and clearer skies make it one of the best times to catch them. If you're interested in exploring Iceland's glaciers, glacier and ice cave tours start in mid-November and continue through March.

Summer is also great for whale watching and spotting other wildlife like dolphins, seals, and puffins. The landscape is vibrant with greenery and waterfalls flowing from the snowmelt—everything is thriving.

A short, half-hour walk from the parking lot brings you to this impressive 10-meter-high waterfall. The hike is straightforward, and the view from the top is very much worth the effort. Svöðufoss cascades down from a striking basalt cliff, and from a distance, it even forms a heart shape—an ideal backdrop for elopement photos, don't you think?
The waterfall pours into the river Laxá, providing a peaceful setting where you can truly appreciate Iceland’s raw, untamed beauty. For the best experience, try to visit on a sunny day. The clear light enhances the majesty of the waterfall and the Snæfellsjökull glacier in the background. Gluggafoss

The cliffs here are famous for the massive rock arch that punches into the sea, and during certain seasons, you can spot puffins nesting along the edges. Just keep in mind, parts of the area might be off-limits in spring and summer to protect these little iconic birds.
This Iceland elopement location has two main areas to check out. The upper section is where you’ll get panoramic views that stretch in every direction. Look north, and you’ll see the imposing Mýrdalsjökull glacier. To the east, the iconic Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise out of the ocean like something out of a legend.
