Frequently Asked Questions About How To Elope in Iceland

While eloping in Iceland is an easy and exciting choice, there are still a few important things to consider before you dive into planning. To help you get familiar with the process and what to expect, let’s break it down a bit.

Why should couples elope in Iceland?

Your wedding should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, right? Something unforgettable. So why not do it in one of the most epic, surreal places on earth? There are tons of reasons to get married in Iceland: waterfalls, volcanoes, the northern lights, black sand beaches—it all feels like a dream. Every corner is calling for an adventure.

One of the best things about eloping in Iceland? You can explore multiple jaw-dropping spots all in one day. Imagine hitting up a lava field, a waterfall, and a black sand beach in a single trip. Or, if you want to stretch it out, make it a two-day adventure and turn your wedding into a full-on weekend celebration. It’s the ultimate way to slow down and savor every second of your experience.

Honestly, I could talk for hours about why Iceland is the perfect spot, but here’s the bottom line: it’ll be a day you’ll never forget. And when it's all captured in photos, you'll have an epic love story to relive all over again and pass down for generations.

How much does it cost to elope in Iceland?

Traditional weddings in the U.S. can be pricey—around $30,000 on average. When eloping in Iceland, you can choose between a super simple setup or something more extravagant. For a basic civil ceremony, it’ll cost about 11,000 ISK (roughly $80 USD or €70, depending on the exchange rate). Beyond that, you can tailor your Iceland elopement experience to fit your budget.

The cost will depend entirely on your vision. Whether you’re prioritizing a specific location, an adventurous activity, a few guests, a killer photography or videography package, or even a cultural tradition, the price will vary. Planning to include a helicopter ride and a glacier tour? That’ll cost more than a low-key ceremony on Reynisfjara Beach with a visit to a waterfall.

However, the way I look at it is, if you’re traveling all the way to Iceland to marry the love of your life, make sure your day reflects everything that’s important to you.

Can foreigners get legally married in Iceland?

Absolutely! Anyone, regardless of orientation, can get legally married in Iceland. To make it happen, you just need to meet a few requirements:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older.

  • You can’t already be married to someone else.

  • You need to provide proof that you are in Iceland legally, which can be done with your airline tickets, passport stamps, or a valid visa.

If you have any questions while planning your Iceland elopement or wedding, feel free to ask. I’m here to help!

Iceland is surprisingly one of the easier countries for foreigners to get legally married in. The Icelandic government issues an international marriage license and certificate that is valid in other countries, including the United States.

What documents do I need to bring to get married in Iceland?

When planning your Icelandic elopement, you’ll need to prepare and submit some essential documents. Be sure to send these documents in about 3 weeks before your wedding date. While you can handle this initial submission via email, you’ll need to present the original documents in person once you arrive in Iceland.

You’ll need to provide original copies of your birth certificate, passport, Marriage Notification, and possibly a certificate of marital status (depending on your country of origin). However, as rules can always change, be sure to keep up to date with the lates regulations. It’s crucial that all documents are translated into Icelandic or English by a sworn translator. You must present both the original documents and their translations.

Don’t worry if this seems overwhelming—I’m here to help with any questions you might have as your Iceland elopement photographer. If handling the paperwork feels like too much, you can always complete the legal requirements in your home country and come to Iceland just for the symbolic ceremony.

Do I need an officiant to get married in Iceland?

Yes, you do need an officiant to get married in Iceland. The cost for an officiant typically starts around $580, but keep in mind that prices can increase depending on how far they need to travel.

Iceland has many talented and fun celebrants who can legally marry you. You’re sure to find one who aligns with your priorities and values. One of my favorite resources for finding a great officiant is Siðmennt. They are non-religious and focus on universal values, as well as your personal beliefs and wishes.

If hiring an officiant isn’t for you, the option still stands to handle the legal aspect of your marriage in your home country and then come to Iceland for a symbolic ceremony. This way, you can design your ceremony exactly how you want it without the added logistics of adding an officiant.

Should I rent a car for my Iceland elopement?

Absolutely, renting a car is a smart move for your Iceland elopement. It makes getting around much easier and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, especially if you’re eyeing those adventurous F-roads. Having your own wheels means you can stop for spontaneous photo ops, chase the Northern Lights, or just find a perfect spot for a picnic.

If you’re heading to Iceland during the winter, a 4x4 is your best bet. The snowy and icy conditions make a vehicle with all-wheel drive a necessity. In the summer, though, a regular car will do just fine for most routes.

For a hassle-free experience, consider using Blue Car Rental—they’re reliable and handy.

Things to Know About Planning an Iceland Elopement

Best Time to Elope in Iceland

Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, but each season has its own unique draws. To make the most of your Iceland elopement, it’s important to understand the weather and prepare accordingly. Each season offers different experiences and settings, from dramatic winter landscapes to vibrant summer nights. Be sure to stay updated on current weather conditions before and during your trip to ensure you’re well-prepared for whatever Iceland throws your way.

Fall Elopements in Iceland

Fall in Iceland—September through December—is my favorite time of year for elopements, even though it’s a bit short. Keep in mind that November and December are practically winter, so expect colder conditions. As a wedding photographer, having the opportunity to shoot during both sunrise and sunset is fantastic, especially with those early sunrises. The fall colors in Iceland are striking, with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows creating a stunning contrast against the country's mountains, glaciers, lava fields, and moss.

The weather can be quite variable, with temperatures ranging from 30°F (0°C) to 50°F (10°C). I recommend packing a good mix of clothes for all types of weather—sun, rain, snow, and wind—and being ready to adjust your plans as needed.

While there's no guarantee you'll see the Northern Lights on any given night, fall's longer nights and clearer skies make it one of the best times to catch them. If you're interested in exploring Iceland's glaciers, glacier and ice cave tours start in mid-November and continue through March.

By fall, the summer crowds have thinned out as school is back in session, so you can enjoy Iceland's natural beauty more peacefully. Plus, prices for accommodation, car rentals, and some activities are lower in the fall. You can still see whales into early October, and it’s also a great season to enjoy some fresh Icelandic produce.

Winter Elopements in Iceland

Winter in Iceland—covering December, January, February, and March—offers a unique experience. With only about 4-5 hours of daylight each day, the conditions are quite different from other seasons. The temperature hovers around 30°F (-1°C) but can drop even lower depending on where you are. While that is not in the extremes, the wind can make it feel way more chilly. Dress warmly and prepare for some serious cold!

This season is known for its snowfall, especially in December and January, though the weather is relatively mild compared to winters in other parts of the world. Keep in mind that snowfall is heavier in the north than in the south. Many F-roads (unpaved roads that access the highlands of Iceland) are closed, and road conditions can be tricky, so it's crucial to stay flexible and have backup plans. On the flip side, winter provides a chance to explore surreal ice caves and see places like black sand beaches covered in fresh white snow.

Spring Elopements in Iceland

Spring in Iceland—March through June—is when the country starts to shake off winter. The snow and ice begin to melt, plants start to grow again, and birds return. It’s a great time to visit because it’s not yet overrun with tourists, and you get a mix of mild temperatures, decent weather, and longer days.

In March and April, it still feels like winter in many ways, with lingering snow and a chill in the air. By May and June, you’ll see more signs of spring, though it’s not quite summer yet. The landscape might still look a bit drab, and rain is pretty common during this time. So, as always, make sure you have the right apparel to handle the elements.

If you want to avoid the usual tourist spots and don’t mind a bit of rain, consider heading southeast to explore glaciers, black sand beaches, lagoons, or hot springs. The quieter beauty of Iceland in spring makes it a solid choice for a memorable elopement.

Summer Elopements in Iceland

Summer in Iceland—June through September—is ideal for an elopement. With daylight stretching from 21 to 24 hours in June, you have ample time to fully enjoy your wedding day. This extended daylight allows you to schedule a range of activities and capture stunning photos at various times of the day without feeling rushed.

Temperatures usually range from 40°F (5°C) to 58°F (15°C), offering a comfortable setting. Although summer tends to have fewer storms, some rain is still possible. Almost all F-roads are open, which means you can access some of Iceland’s most amazing spots with a 4x4 vehicle.

Summer is also great for whale watching and spotting other wildlife like dolphins, seals, and puffins. The landscape is vibrant with greenery and waterfalls flowing from the snowmelt—everything is thriving.

However, keep in mind that summer attracts a lot of visitors, so popular spots can get crowded. To enjoy a more private experience, consider less-traveled locations for your ceremony. I can help you find some of these hidden gems as we plan your Iceland elopement.

Where To Elope in Iceland

There are countless amazing places to elope in Iceland, each with its own distinct landscape. While I have some favorite “secret” spots that I’ll share when we start planning your wedding, here are a few locations that are always winners:

Svöðufoss

Tucked away in West Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Svöðufoss is a hidden gem that feels both grand and intimate. Though it’s been around for ages, it’s only recently started catching the eyes of tourists. With the addition of a new parking lot, accessing this stunning spot has become much easier.

A short, half-hour walk from the parking lot brings you to this impressive 10-meter-high waterfall. The hike is straightforward, and the view from the top is very much worth the effort. Svöðufoss cascades down from a striking basalt cliff, and from a distance, it even forms a heart shape—an ideal backdrop for elopement photos, don't you think?

The waterfall pours into the river Laxá, providing a peaceful setting where you can truly appreciate Iceland’s raw, untamed beauty. For the best experience, try to visit on a sunny day. The clear light enhances the majesty of the waterfall and the Snæfellsjökull glacier in the background. Summer is the perfect time to linger and take in the scenery, and the spot is a favorite among photographers eager to capture Iceland’s rugged charm.

Gluggafoss

Down in South Iceland, near Fljótshlíð, lies Gluggafoss—a waterfall that’s as stunning as it is off the beaten path. Standing about 44 meters tall, it’s less crowded compared to the more popular spots like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, making it a great choice for a more private experience.

What sets Gluggafoss apart is its unique geology. The river has carved out holes and tunnels in the soft palagonite bedrock, creating what locals call “gluggar” or windows. Nestled northwest of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010, the waterfall offers a truly mesmerizing sight.

Although some parts of the trail are closed for soil preservation, a short hike from the parking lot gets you close enough to feel the waterfall’s power. For you adventurous souls who like a bit of Type II fun, you can opt for a hike up the hill for an incredible bird’s-eye view of the area.

Dyrhólaey

Out on Iceland’s South Coast, Dyrhólaey gives you some of the wildest views of the black sand beaches. If you step just a little away from the main viewpoint, you’ll find a more private spot to soak it all in without the crowds.

The cliffs here are famous for the massive rock arch that punches into the sea, and during certain seasons, you can spot puffins nesting along the edges. Just keep in mind, parts of the area might be off-limits in spring and summer to protect these little iconic birds.

This Iceland elopement location has two main areas to check out. The upper section is where you’ll get panoramic views that stretch in every direction. Look north, and you’ll see the imposing Mýrdalsjökull glacier. To the east, the iconic Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise out of the ocean like something out of a legend. And to the west, the black coastline seems endless, with that massive lava arch cutting into the sea.

Down below, you’ll find Arnardrangur, also known as "Eagle Rock," a place where eagles used to nest until the mid-1800s. This spot gives you incredible views of Reynisdrangar and Reynisfjara, with the black sand beach as the perfect backdrop. And if you’re lucky enough to visit during low tide, you can wander along the beach, where epic caves and rock formations are waiting to be explored. This place has that rugged, untamed vibe that makes it perfect if you are looking for something a little bit more private.

Múlagljúfur

Tucked away in the south of Iceland, Múlagljúfur Canyon feels like one of those hidden spots that’s just waiting to be discovered by couples looking for a private, off-the-grid elopement. It’s been under the radar for years, but now it’s catching the eye of those searching for something more adventurous and secluded.

Close to the Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoons, this canyon is perfect if you're after a dramatic backdrop without the usual tourist crowds. The trail itself is rugged—narrow paths, loose rocks, and overgrown bushes keep things interesting. Summer is hands down the best time to make the hike, with solid footing and long daylight hours, but if you're feeling bold, autumn and spring bring a moodier vibe—though they can get a bit muddy. Winter is only for the brave, but the right gear for snow and ice will get you there.

The hike itself is short but gives you a full dose of Iceland’s raw beauty. About 15 minutes in, you’ll reach Hangandifoss waterfall, where the water’s so blue it almost feels unreal. As you keep going, the views open up, showing off the Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon and jagged mountains that would look incredible in your elopement photos. There’s even a small, unnamed waterfall along the way that feels like something out of a legend.

But the real highlight is at the end of the trail: Múlafoss waterfall. With its remote location and untamed landscape, it’s the perfect spot for you and your partner to say your vows surrounded by nothing but nature. Whether you’re planning a summer elopement or feeling adventurous enough to brave the cooler months, Múlagljúfur Canyon is a spot that will make your Iceland elopement unforgettable.

What to Wear to Your Iceland Elopement

Iceland's weather can change on a dime, so packing smart is key. You'll want to layer up to stay comfortable in varying conditions. For instances of more extreme weather, start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm middle layer for insulation, and top it off with a waterproof, windproof outer layer to handle the elements.

If you plan to do any exploring, opt for sturdy boots or appropriate footwear that can handle everything from muddy trails to icy paths. While you’ll undoubtedly look great, comfort and practicality are crucial, as you'll likely be on your feet and exploring various terrains. This approach ensures you'll stay warm, dry, and comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.

I also have to mention, don’t be surprised if your wedding attire shows a bit of wear and tear by the end of your adventure. That’s just a sign of an epic Iceland elopement filled with exploration and unforgettable moments.
