Winter Solstice Elopement on Iceland’s Black Sand Beach

Amidst the rugged and icy beauty, Brendan and Kong embarked on a bold adventure to celebrate their love with a Winter Iceland elopement, on the winter solstice. Traveling from Philadelphia, while Brendan had explored Iceland's landscapes before, it was Kong's first visit to the land of fire and ice. Their vision was clear—to exchange vows on the day of the winter solstice, regardless of the weather.

Now, winter solstice in Iceland is unique, defining the shortest day of the year. Some regions bask in mere hours of sunlight, while others witness the day entirely enveloped in darkness. Determined to craft the winter elopement of their dreams, we bundled up against the cold winds and set out into the epic Icelandic landscape.

An Intimate Ceremony at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

On the morning of their special day, I picked up Brendan and Kong from their hotel in Reykjavik to kick off our epic journey. We hit the road for a 2.5-hour drive, our destination being the Reynisfjara black sand beach—the chosen locale for their intimate winter Iceland elopement ceremony. The exclusivity of the moment, with just the two of them and myself, added a profound, intimate, and meaningful touch to the celebration. Despite the simplicity of the ceremony, it was a beautiful and tender exchange of vows, heightened by the Icelandic chill in the air that added a raw and powerful element to the occasion. After the ceremony, we stayed around to capture wedding portraits in the breathtaking landscape.

The stark contrast of fresh white snow against the dark, volcanic sands, and the surrounding landscapes created a jaw-dropping setting, with Mother Nature herself seemingly cranking up the majesty of the moment. Kong, the fearless bride, sported a black wedding dress and shawl that defied tradition. It wasn't just cool; it perfectly synced with the entire vibe of the day. Paired with her vibrant tattoos, it was a killer combo that totally made the look. The couple's black wedding dress and suit against the snowy panorama, coupled with Kong's bold ink, crafted an unforgettable scene in the heart of Iceland's untamed beauty.

Winter Iceland Elopement Portraits at Sólheimajökull Glacier

After the black sand beach elopement ceremony and some portraits, we retreated to the warmth of the car, where Brendan and Kong marked the occasion with celebratory champagne and steaming hot chocolate. This was a much-needed, perfect blend of warmth against the crisp Icelandic air. Our next destination was Sólheimajökull, where we captured some incredibly amazing photos in front of the glacier.

The glacier, with its striking shades of white and icy blue, was nothing short of awesome that day—a true embodiment of a winter wedding dream. Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of the mighty icecap of Mýrdalsjökull on the South Coast of Iceland, spans eight kilometers in length and two kilometers in width (or five miles long and just over a mile wide). Unfortunately, like many of Iceland's glaciers, including this one, Sólheimajökull is rapidly shrinking. The evidence lies in the glacier lagoon at its base, revealing the alarming rate of recession—receding the length of an Olympic swimming pool every year. Yikes. This undeniable consequence of climate change, irreversible and swift, might lead to its disappearance within decades.

For couples considering adding this as an Iceland elopement location, witnessing the grandeur of the ice cap is an experience to cherish soon. It’s an urgent reminder to appreciate and protect the precious wonders of our natural world before they vanish.

Final Elopement Day Portraits at Kvernufoss

Our final destination on this winter solstice elopement journey through Iceland brought us to Kvernufoss. I love this location, and once more, the atmosphere was nothing short of impressive. Kvernufoss is a 30-meter high (98 ft) waterfall, half-hidden away in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the Ring Road.

While this waterfall is awe-inspiring and lush in the summer, there's something particularly spectacular about it in the winter months. Covered in snow and ice, it takes on a moody edge that once again, perfectly complemented Brendan and Kong's black wedding dress and suit.

Thankfully, they were well-prepared, sporting sturdy boots that proved crucial on the potentially icy trail during winter. Being ready for the unique challenges of an Iceland elopement, especially in winter, is essential. Dinner in Reykjavik: The Perfect Ending to an Adventurous Elopement Day

After the epic adventure of their winter solstice elopement in Iceland, Brendan and Kong wrapped up their day with a dinner in Reykjavik. One of the aspects I thoroughly appreciate about elopements is the freedom to choose whatever resonates with you as a couple—no expectations. Whether it's a cozy picnic in the heart of nature or a celebratory dinner at a restaurant in town, the day is yours to craft as you envision.

Frozen Moments & Sweet Memories

On their elopement day, it was all about keeping it short and sweet. The biting cold of the Icelandic winter made extended outdoor photoshoots a bit challenging. But, Brendan and Kong, true troopers that they are, embraced the chill and stayed true to their vision (with a few trips to the car to warm up, of course). We made every moment count, capturing exactly what they had envisioned.

To combat the cold, I had a trick up my sleeve—I had prepared a snack basket for them, a savior in the icy weather. Hot chocolate, chocolates, my mom's special twisted doughnut, and some Christmas goodies were all part of the adventure, adding warmth and sweetness to their memorable day. Going the extra mile to ensure my couples' day is extra special is something I  love to do, creating not just beautiful moments but also unforgettable experiences.
